So that was dinner. It was burritos, btw, or rather my usual burrito thing made up as tacos, but by the time we reached dinner I was down two glasses of wine and killing in that Wii Play game where you shoot birds and aliens and balloons. I’m not a video game person, aside from a childhood dalliance with Dangerous Dave, and it never occurred to me to take advantage of the X Box and Wii temporarily sitting beneath my temporary big screen plasma TV. Every time I’m in a setting where, say, group Guitar Hero arises I either excuse myself or make a fumbling, jelly fingered attempt, constantly asking what goes where and how you go left and what am I doing, and I panic when the game starts and everything zooms away and then the game comes to an end and it seems somehow disappointed with me. Then one night I decided fuck it, I will pick up that Wiimote and start from the beginning and figure out how to do this myself, and I invited around a crew of ladies and made burritos and grilled pineapple for dessert and we painted our nails and got lightly toasted and it was awesome.
Monkey’s Burritos
Serves as many as necessary
- 2 tins kidney beans, drained
- One medium or two small tomatoes, chopped
- A bunch of coriander, washed and chopped
- A red onion, diced
- A lime, juiced
- Olive oil
- A chilli, thoroughly deseeded, rinsed, then searched for any stray seeds if you’re a chilli-phobe like me, chopped
- An avocado, diced
- One tablespoon ground cumin
- Sour cream, tortillas and grated cheese, to serve
Combine beans, tomatoes, coriander, lime juice, chilli, avocado, onion, oil and cumin in a bowl. Salt and pepper to taste. I like to squeeze the seeds out of the tomato before chopping, and microwave the lime for 10 seconds to make it extra juicy, but I’m weird like that. Fold burrito-style into warmed tortillas, with sour cream and cheese.
